19 Oct 2015: Inaugral Mathsweek event at DIT Grangegorman

On Thursday 15 October, the new DIT campus at Grangegorman hosted, for the first time, a special event to coincide with Mathsweek. Sixth-class primary school students and first-year secondary school students took part in an array of fun interactive games and puzzles and were entertained by Steve Humble (Dr Maths) with a talk entitled Secrets, Lies and Mathematics. The School of Mathematical Sciences is a partner in National Mathsweek events and the event was organised in conjunction with the Access office, DIT, and the Mathematics Learning Support Centre.

19 Oct 2015: Mathsweek events attract 600 school children to DIT, Kevin Street

The School of Mathematical Sciences, DIT, welcomed over 600 school children to its National Mathsweek events at the Kevin Street campus on Monday 12 October and Wednesday 14 October. Staff and undergraduate students from the School were on hand to challenge primary and secondary school children to explore mathematics, have fun and engage in a variety of games, puzzles and competitions. Kjartan Poskitt (author of the Murderous Maths books) and Dr Fernando Blasco entertained with their unique combinations of murderous and magical mathematics. The events were extremely successful contributing to the popularity of this year’s 10th annual Mathsweek.

15 Sept 2015: Welcome to our new first-year students

We are delighted to welcome a large number of new faces onto our full-time undergraduate programmes BSc (Hons) Mathematical Sciences and BSc (Hons) Industrial Mathematics.  The programmes continue to go from strength to strength with over thirty-five new students expected to register on the programmes.  The new students are due to graduate in 2019 from our brand new campus in Grangegorman.

7 Oct 2015: Careers Event Showcases Careers for Mathematicians

The first School of Mathematical Sciences Careers Showcase was held on Monday 5 October 2015.careers showcase 2015 The event, for students of the School's full-time, undergraduate, honours degree programmes, invited speakers from Accenture, the Central Statistics Office (CSO), SAP and Zurich Life to talk about opportunities in their sectors for mathematicians and the important graduate skills and attributes that are particularly brought to the workplace by mathematics graduates. The event, organised by Dr Blathnaid Sheridan, the leader of the School Engagement Workgroup, was a great success allowing students to build upon their programme's professional development modules and to meet and talk to employers in the context of the software skills, modelling skills and practical, problem-solving skills they are currently learning during their studies.
