For the first time, a special event to coincide with Mathsweek is being held on the new Grangegorman campus of Dublin Institute of Technology.

The year 2015 marks the 10th annual Mathsweek and, once again, the School of Mathematical Sciences is a partner in National Mathsweek events. In addition to the events being held on the Kevin Street campus, DIT Grangegorman will be hosting Steve Humble (Dr Maths) as he explores Secrets, Lies and Mathematics. Primary school students from 6th class and first-year secondary school students in the local area will be invited to take part in Steve's talk and an array of fun interactive games and puzzles.

Mathsweek 2015 (12 – 14 October)

The School of Mathematical Sciences, Dublin Institute of Technology is delighted to announce its activities for Mathsweek 2015. All events will be held on the Kevin Street campus of DIT.

Monday 12 October 2015

11.00 am – 2.00 pm: Activities

A number of stands with fun interactive demonstrations and competitions (before and after the lecture).

12.00 pm – 1.00 pm: Magic Maths with Dr Fernando Blasco

A mathematician at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid, Fernando is one of Spain's best known promoters of mathematics. "Most people envisage mathematics only as a necessary tool for science and technology. A tool rather abstruse, composed largely of equations and complex definitions. While it is true that maths provides the language for science, and that its development has been motivated by problems in areas such as physics, chemistry or biology, it is also true that many practitioners have focused since ancient times on its recreational side. Surprisingly, this side of maths tends to be forgotten by both the general audience and not so few mathematicians." Dr Fernando Blasco uses magic to introduce the public to topics such as prime numbers, knot theory, sudoku, topology, number systems, mind games, Rubik's cube, calendars or quick calculations. He has collaborated with TV shows in Spain and has played in Civic Centres, Science Museums, University Classrooms and other stages.

Target audience: Junior Certificate Cycle, Senior School.
